Executive Summary
NPR's Chief Executive just embarrassed the organization consequently she should act responsibility and.....

I was listening to Morning Edition this morning and they announced that Juan Williams' contract had been terminated.  The stated reason was because while on the cable program "The Factor" he said he felt nervous when he was on an airplane and  saw people dressed in traditional Arab clothing.  Though the Morning Edition announcement did not give many details I assumed the firing was either an overreaction to the introspection liberals tend to express before they make their main point or it was an excuse someone at NPR was waiting for because they were too cowardly to come out overtly and fire him because they didn't like him appearing on the Fox network.

Since I won't pay for cable at home I hadn't seen the Factor interview so I went to the internet and found a discussion of  the firing on the MSNBC show Morning Joe.  The commentators there expressed exactly the introspective perspective.  I couldn't write the details of that expression any better so view the discussion yourself by following to the link i provide and then looking for the video: Clip of Morning Joe

It also turns out that once the original excuse given by NPR caused a public outcry Vivian Schiller, chief executive of NPR came out and admitted the second theory.

I'm a big believer that NPR has been a beacon of information while other talk radio and cable news programming has dragged the collective IQ of the country down precipitously.  This foolish treatment of Juan Williams is an enormous hit to the reputation of this organization and needs the responsible parties to act today to ensure they no longer pose a threat to the stellar reputation of the NPR news department.

For those that wonder about my sincerity and may conclude I'm just looking for an excuse to beat up NPR;

Read a Sept article where I tell you what I think of NPR:  Christine O'Donnell = Shirley Sherrod?

Read how I reacted last week when I end up watching too much Fox News:  2010 Endorsements

Post Script:  True to form NPR is the best source of balanced information on this story. Here are some links to their write-ups.

Fox News Gives Juan Williams $2 Million Contract NPR's title is bad.  The first sentence of the article better sums up the context "NPR is facing sharp criticism for terminating the contract of news analyst Juan Williams."  And of course I contend the second sentence might be NPR's official position but it doesn't relate to the facts "Williams was fired Wednesday for violating NPR's ethics policy over comments he made on Fox News about Muslims".  But other than this it is a good summation of the issue.

 NPR's Firing of Juan Williams Was Poorly Handled  Below is a comment I made on this story:
The author mistakenly states, "Williams was doing the kind of stereotyping in a public platform that is dangerous to a democracy". In fact Mr. Williams did his stereotyping in private while he was on the plane. What he did in public was an analysis using an introspective example of how the greater society needs to conduct themselves to overcome individual shortcomings. There is a huge difference this author doesn't seem to understand and one that will prevent Vivian Schiller from understanding her continued association with the organization will forever degrade the reputation of the NPR news division.
