Rep Boehner should debate Coussoule

by Thomas F. McMasters 18 May 2010
Executive Summary
Unless the Democratic challenger happens to raise $1,000,000 in donations about the only way Rep Boehner could lose re-election is if he decides to acknowledge he has a challenger, yet I argue in this article he should offer to hold two or three joint appearances / forums / debates.  Yes he could possibly lose his seat but the greater likelihood is he solidifies a rock solid stature of a man of principle where the good of the country trumps personal ambition.

If you're familiar with my political philosophy you'll know I believe competition makes our elected officials better representatives.  Just a couple months ago I wrote "Republicans are poised to take control of the House and possibly the Senate".  Unbelievably, today I get the impression the tide is turning and Democrats may even pick up a couple seats in the house this next election season.  I think if Rep Boehner is going to have any chance at becoming Speaker of the House he needs to do something dramatic to show the Republican Party deserves to be the majority party in Congress. Today the centrist of the country have the choice of continuing with a Democratic policy which most people respect because it is presented honestly even though they know if implemented can only lead to economic stagnation; or the other choice going back to the Republicans who present reasonable solutions then fail to enforce regulations or backhandedly create sweetheart deals for buddy industries which leads to similar debt.  Since Republican leaders spent so much effort hiding the debt they created the public didn't get a fair opportunity to object.  The centrist isn't thrilled about either choice.

Rep Boehner has declared publicly the Republican Party has learned its lessons and if given the chance would not go back to Bush era ways.  The last time the Republicans controlled the House they ran it in a very partisan fashion.  In appealing to the country to restore the Republicans to the majority Representative Boehner professes his stint in the minority has allowed him to learn why the country needs the majority to listen to and recognize the minority party.  He assures us the Republican Party can be trusted in the role as the dominant party.  Unfortunately, because the Democratic Party's healthcare reform plan was so costly, wasteful and useless the Republicans had to band together in unity as a Party of "no".  To some centrists this plants doubt about the Republican Party's trustworthiness as a contender for dominate party. One of the surest ways for Rep Boehner to show he is ready to lead as Speaker of the House is to positively show the Republican Party will listen to and consider the ideas and strategies of the Democratic minority.  Rep Boehner can show this readiness by acknowledging his Democratic challenger and in the form of a debate or candidate forum explaining point by point the superior logic of fiscal discipline and  well conceived regulations.

Yes I understand ignoring a weak opponent is the safest way to "win" re-election.  However, I believe Rep Boehner needs to act swiftly to show the Republican Party can be trusted as the majority party or else there is a good chance they may actually lose seats by the time November comes along.  If he takes the lead and has his campaign staff organize debates he will show the country he is ready to lead both the majority and minority.  I also know in my heart the process will make him a better representative for the people of the 8th Congressional District of Ohio.
