Article by Thomas F. McMasters the intellectual alternative for conservative commentary

| Beck and Rush are laughing all the way to the bank. I do alright, but I when I have the time to work on this site I choose to write instead of adding Google ads or opening up subscriptions. Thus the fundamental difference between why we promote capitalism. I believe promoting capitalism provides the best method for raising the standard or living for all individuals in this country. The others believe promoting capitalism provides the best method for raising a specific individuals standard of living. The little differences in how we view capitalism makes a big difference in the benefit the country sees in the implementation. Beck and Rush view capitalism as their means to get other people's money. This works for them. The question is how many of their 20 million disciples will end up being the next $400 million prophet compared to how many can be convinced to pad Beck's wallet by buying gold at wildly inflated prices. |
While at a memorial day get together I talked with a foster mom. She took in a boy about the same age as her son. Her son does well in school, participates in sports and acts polite in adult company. Before she took the boy in he got in trouble at home, school and with the police. Of course even at just 15 years old he already used drugs. So you had two nearly polar teenagers living together in the same household with the hope the responsible and productive one could influence and straighten out the other. The boys seemed to bond. The mother assessed the responsible kid would stay responsible but she was disappointed the foster kid had not progressed. Even though the substance abuser didn't seem like he was going to be a big influence on his equally aged foster brother I noticed that the younger kids tended to follow him around as if he were the rock star of the party. So I made a point to compare the attention each of the two boys received from the other kids at the gathering. The Substance abuser received 3 or 4 times the attention from the other kids than the boy with good grades and good manners. Interestingly we have the same phenomenon going on with conservative adults and it's leading the movement away from conservative thinking.
Don't get me wrong. I am compassionate enough to accept that people who have made mistakes in the past can be rehabilitated. But there has to be at least some consideration that they may still posses the same level of brain power that led them to the decisions which caused them to become alcoholics and drug addicts. I am not willing to accept drug addiction leads higher intelligence. Therefore, I conclude there is something other than intellect driving the preponderance of alcoholics and drug addicts to the forefront of the pseudo conservative movement. To be consistent with the adolescent incident mentioned at the beginning of this article we can look to the appeal of anti-authority figures. That analogy also fits my claim that these people are actually pseudo conservatives. Those of us that are real conservatives realized early in life our parents and other authority figures possessed valuable knowledge and we could benefit significantly by considering, evaluating and implementing the good advice from their experiences. Where we failed as adolescents was to allow the rebel to dominate the conversation within our peer group. Now as adults many more people search for the lessons they could have learned from the authorities of their past. Unfortunately, for many they can't go back and gain that knowledge so they turn to what they know - the rebel who miraculously converted to "conservatism" just in time to help relieve these people from the burdens of their hard earned money.
